Leprosy Burden

In 2018 there were 208,619 new cases reported globally from 159 countries, and the rate of detection of new cases was 2.74 per 100,000 population. About 95% of these cases were notified from the 23 leprosy high priority countries, including Tanzania.

In Tanzania,  the number of registered leprosy cases on MDT treatment has gradually declined from nearly 3,500 cases in 2006 to 1,535 in 2018 with significant change of newly notified cases (as shown in Figure 11 below) with case detection rate of new cases of 2.8 per 100 000 population.
