NTLP LAUNCH THE “TAMBUA TB” M-HEALTH APPLICATIONS

In the effort of finding the TB missing cases in Tanzania (currently estimated at 84,000 annually) and continuing creating TB awareness, The National Tuberculosis and Leprosy Programme (NTLP) on 21st September, 2018 launched the "TAMBUA TB" mobile apps. The two USSD code based applications is for self screening and general TB knowledge to the general public as well as treatment adherence and literacy among the TB patients.

The two USSD code based applications is for self-screening and general TB knowledge to the general public as well as treatment adherence and literacy among the TB patients.

In his speech, the guest of honor, Deputy Minister for Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Hon. Dr. Faustine Engelbert Ndugulile (MP) explained that the Global Strategy to End TB 2016–2035 geared towards ensuring high – quality TB services; universal access, equity, gender and those most at risk. In which its objective number 7.2 highlights the need of using Advocacy, Communication and Social Mobilization (ACSM) approaches in promoting the utilization of TB, TB-HIV and Leprosy control services.

The Deputy Minister point out that among approaches technological innovations come with new opportunities including using mobile technologies (mHealth) to increase community awareness on TB, TB screening and treatment monitoring. However, he stressed out the requisite of having an easy to use solution with comprehensive functions and interoperable with other existing digital health systems strategically implemented prioritizing the high TB burdened regions. In the same view the Government is now working at harmonizing efforts and taking a lead in intervention identification and support mapping to maximize the impact in National health system.

During the TAMBUA TB overview presentation, MS Agatha Mshanga, NTLP ACSM Coordinator informed that anyone from the general public can do self TB screen by dial *152*05# then select 6 for TB followed by 1 for self-screening then answers questions. Upon completion if the client is symptomatic the system will direct him/her to go to the health facility for diagnosis, if the client has no symptoms the system will send the general TB awareness messages. On the other hand, confirmed TB patients can be enrolled to get TB messages for treatment adherence and literacy so as to ensure treatment success, this is done by dialing *152*05*14#. However, this code is only for trained Health Care Workers at the Health Facility.
